The university is a co-educational institution with three faculties, namely the Faculty of Art, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Design. The university also provides continuing education services through its Faculty of Further Education.

Founded in 1876 by the Ontario Society of Artists as the Ontario College of Art, the institution was the first school in Canada dedicated to arts education. The institution changed its name twice, in 1886 and 1890, before being granted a provincial charter and changing its name to the Ontario College of Arts (OCA) in 1912.

The institution was known as the OCA College of Art and Design until it changed its name to the Ontario College of Art in 1996. The institution was granted university status in 2002 and is empowered to award certain degrees. The University was adopted as part of the institution’s name in 2010 to reflect its change in status. In 2020, the Ontario government granted full degree-granting authority to universities.
