We are the IET and we inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community to engineer a better world. As a diverse home across engineering and technology, we share knowledge that helps make better sense of the world in order to solve the challenges that matter.
IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers based in the United States and IET is the Institution of Engineering and Technology based in the United Kingdom. Both have a long history of predecessor organizations serving the technical and research needs of electrical and electronics engineers.
The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution. The IET was established in 2006 and consists of two separate bodies: the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE), which dates back to 1871, and the United Institute of Engineers (IIE), which dates back to 1884. Its global membership currently exceeds 158,000 in 153 countries. IET’s main offices are located in Savoy Square, London, UK and the Michael Faraday Building in Stevenage, UK.
In the UK, the IET has the power to set up professional registrations for the titles of Chartered Engineer, Associate Engineer, Engineering Technician and ICT Technician as a licensed member body of the Engineering Council.
The IET is registered as a charity in England and Wales and Scotland.
The IEE and IIE began discussing a merger in 2004 to form a new agency. In September 2005, both agencies voted on the merger, with members voting in favor (IEE 73.5%, IIE 95.7%). The merger also required government approval, so a petition to supplement the bylaws was filed with the Privy Council to allow the creation of a new body. The Privy Council approved the proposal on 14 December 2005 and the new body was established on 31 March 2006.
