The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is a public state-related research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The university is made up of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located on the Pittsburgh downtown campus, which is home to the university’s central administration and home to approximately 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
The 132-acre Pittsburgh campus includes various historic buildings belonging to the Schenley Farms Historic District, most notably its 42-story Gothic Revival central building, the Cathedral of Learning. Pitt is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified as an “R1: Doctoral University – Very High Research Activity”. It is the second largest non-government employer in the Pittsburgh metro area.
Pitt’s history can be traced back to the Pittsburgh Academy founded in 1787 by Hugh Henry Brackenridge. Still on the edge of the American frontier at the time, Pittsburgh’s rapid growth meant that a suitable university was soon needed, and Pitt’s charter in 1819 granted it university status as Western Pennsylvania University.
After two devastating fires and several relocations, the university moved to its current location near Oakland, Pittsburgh and was renamed the University of Pittsburgh in 1908 by an act of the state legislature. Pitt was a private institution until 1966, when it became part of the University of Pittsburgh’s Commonwealth Higher Education System.
